like collecting "treasures" on the beach.
These photos are from late fall, I forgot my digital camera that day and was forced to shoot only film (which I just got developed a few days ago).
Anytime time Kevin and I take a walk on the beach I randomly pick up things that catch my attention, which is probably more than you could imagine. On this instance I decided I wanted to pick up everything I found and neatly lay it all out to photograph when I was finished. This was only 15 minutes or so of collecting!!
There is always a ridiculous amount of litter on the beach. Perhaps I'm strange but picking these things up that people seem to have forgotten after a fun day of frolicking in the sun or that wash up on the beach from the lake is so interesting to me. Curlers? A glue bottle lid? The letter "P"? So weird.
On of my favorite finds from the day is that thing that has "BØ" on it. I'm not 100% sure what the heck it is but I liked it so much I brought it home (you can actually see it on my shelf in this post). Anyone know what it is or what it means?
After re-reading this post before hitting publish, I realize how funny it seems (and actually rather embarrassing) to admit that picking up trash on the beach is super fun to me. But that's actually pretty awesome, someone needs to help clean up the beach so why not someone who gets a kick out of it? Next time you're at the beach take a small bucket and pick up all the trash you find (bring gloves if you think it sounds icky!) it's surprisingly fun to look at all the strange things you find there when you're all done, plus you're doing good for the earth!xoxo
I'm Kaylah. thrifting queen.

Trash or not these are amazing!!
ReplyDeleteBø is a town here in Norway (the letter 'ø' is used both in Norwegian and Danish), so maybe it has something to do with that? It does look like a sign of sorts...
ReplyDeleteI hope this helps in solving the mystery :)
wow, that's a lot to collect in 15 minutes! the letter P is kind of random? The thing with the holes kinda freaks me out :( I like the BO-thing though.
ReplyDeleteI kind of do that too, collect things on walks or at the beach; the usual, feathers, fun drift wood, shells/pebbles but also if I find really random things then yes I have a tendency to release my inner magpie!
ReplyDeleteHappy Magpie-ing x
Bø is the name of a couple of places in Norway:
ReplyDeletehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B%C3%B8_%28disambiguation%29
It is also an amusement park:

what weird and wonderful finds, I wish there was a beach near me

Lol, how fun! I mean, those are little treasures! I didnt think at all that you picked trash!
ReplyDeleteWish we had a beach around here where people left things too!
Keep collecting your treasures and have fun! :D
Oh, this makes me miss living near the beach ! :(
ReplyDeleteI love that you're promoting your own hobby, we do all need to pitch in and do our bit for the Earth! xx
ReplyDeleteI think it's amazing how this sort of things juste seem dirty in real life, but you have some magic in your hands and turn them poetic on your blog!
ReplyDeleteOn the one hand I could bet that if I went to the beach tomorrow I wouldn't find anything cute in the sand... but on the other hand I'm quite sure the beach would look different if I started looking for nice things! And who knows, I might be surprised to find things I didn't expected.
I don't know if my speach is clear but in a nutshell : thanks for encouraging us to look at the world around us with curious and optimistic view. It's inspiring, really :)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bø,_Telemark
ReplyDeleteNot sure what it is you found though...
Haha, Bø is a city in Norway, I've a friend who lives there :)
ReplyDeletehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B%C3%B8,_Telemark
Also: in norwegian you can say that a ghost says 'bøøøøø'.
:) ok that was probably crappy english, but you get my point ;)
Haha it seems you are a 'strandjutter'. That's the Dutch term for someone who collects objects they find on the beach. On the Dutch isles there are a few juttermuseums, where strandjutters display their collection. I've been to one, and it was totally cool to see al those non-related items together! Really made me wonder what the story behind them was. So nothing to be embarassed about ;) And besides, your helping to keep the beaches clean, right? So kudos for you :)
ReplyDeleteI think it's fabulous that you pick up garbage! I always intend to do that whenever I go hiking. I hate seeing litter! I once found a pair of dentures at the beach (to which my dad's girlfriend chased my grandma around with). Good for you!
ReplyDeleteI don't think it's weird at all, but I am the type to pick up more "gross" trash, like cigarette butts and food wrappers, on hikes or in the park. I think a lot of people assume that "someone else" like a park ranger or otherwise is going to get it, but when it comes down to it, YOU are the one who is seeing the trash, so why don't YOU pick it up?
ReplyDeleteQuite simply: more people should take a leaf out of your book.

Hi!
ReplyDeleteI think "BØ" might be danish.. The letter Ø is scandinavian. I'm from Denmark, but we don't have a word called "BØ".. It might be the tree beech - in Denmark we call it "bøg" :)
PS. I love your blog! <3
Not to mention the pictures are cool too! It's kind of 'things organized neatly' but much grittier.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a lot of fun! I'm sure some would find it weird because it's someone trash they left on the beach, but you found some awesome things!
ReplyDeleteHello u lovely person!
ReplyDeleteBø is a little place in Norway,or actually, we have two places called Bø:) ..Or/and it's the word we say when we want to scare someone; -BØ! (BOH!! hihi ) :D hugs from a norwegian reader
x
This looks like an I spy picture!
ReplyDeleteI like the rocks that you found! "My" beach back home has a lot of pretty green rocks that I used to take home (and that my mom used to throw away) when I was younger ^^
ReplyDelete"bø" means boo in norwegian :) (as in the word you use to scare someone)
ReplyDeleteI love finding little treasures at the beach! It's so fun! I really wish I lived closer to the beach so I could do it more often...

I am constantly scanning the ground for treasure. I teach high school, so sometimes the treasure can be especially scandalous!
ReplyDeleteThere is absolutely nothing wrong with being amused by the trash you found on the beach, especially the knick-knacks that look so strange. Helping Mother Nature is cool! :]
ReplyDeleteHaha, your last paragraph made me laugh. I didn't even think about it being trash until you said so!
ReplyDeleteAlso, "BØ" = Body, No odor! (I made that up... obviously... I have no idea what the real meaning is. :) )
The Ø is a letter in the danish and norwegian alphabet. It does not have an equal in the english alphabet. Read more here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%98 I am swedish, that's how I know...
ReplyDeleteConsidering it's all just rubbish, it makes for a rather interesting collection of things. Me and my boyfriend are always getting funny looks for picking things up off the floor while we're out and about.
ReplyDeleteI do this too! Our parents would make it a game when we were children & we'd leave the beach each day of our vacation with far more trash to haul out than we hauled in. I still have a few finds lingering about, my favorite being a purple xylophone key with a monkey & the letter B on it. I have always kept it in my cars on the dash ... I cannot get rid of it, isn't it strange how objects find us & become a part of our lives.
ReplyDeleteyay for helping mother earth!
ReplyDeletelove the little bubble wand. luckily this "trash" looks like "treasures" too. what a great idea! i'll definitely do this next time we're at the beach.
ReplyDeletexo
Its not weird to me at all! I have done the same thing since I was a little girl! My husband and I do it now too! All the treasures are like little stories...its fun to imagine who left them and what they were doing! I love the way you arranged and photographed! I think I might have to do the same next time we are beaching!

ReplyDeleteIt actually makes a pretty cool photo too!
ReplyDeleteNice activity :) we do it once a year in France with the SurfRiders Association, trying to find you an English link, I found that they do it in the US too => http://www.spyoptic.com/blog/2011/11/spy-teams-up-with-surfrider-for-a-beach-clean-at-haleiwa-beach-park/
ReplyDeleteHaha!
ReplyDeleteBØ means BOO!
It's Norwegian.
I don't know what the thing is, maybe from a word game or something?
Edit: Bø is also the name of a small village in Norway:
ReplyDeletehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bø,_Telemark
So now you know :)
Want to know a secret? Sometimes, I pick of interesting pieces of trash to use in art projects. I suppose that makes me a bit of a weirdee but quirky can be good, right?
ReplyDeleteI pick up rubbish off the beach too...you find such pretty things, I usually find empty cans and bottles to take to the recycling!
ReplyDeleteI could walk along the beach for hours just looking for interesting things =)
ReplyDeleteMy favorite thing is a tiny piece of broken porcelain. I think it was part of a mug or something. The edges are not sharp anymore, really washed-out. It must have been in the water for a long time.
Another thing is a little rubberduck which is full of sand.
It always think those things come for far away and went through the whole ocean =)
Anna
That looks like fun! So amazing!
ReplyDeleteThat's a lot of things in just 15 minutes! Wow, keep up the good collecting! :)
ReplyDeletemuch love, vivi

ReplyDeleteI love finding random stuff at the beach! Last time I went I found a hot dog in a bread, and a Russian juice carton.
ReplyDeleteI think Bø is a place name in Norway. Could be a Norwegian/Danish word aswell, but I'm not sure.
I don't know what it is, but the word "bø" is the same as "boo", like when you scare people :-) In norwegian.
ReplyDeleteI always beach combed as a child... and still as an adult. So many great bits and pieces wash up PLUS it's so good for the environment :) Love the random flower hair clip!
ReplyDeleteThat's funny because me and Justice do the same thing! I've managed to only keep cool rocks from every beach we've been to from Alaska to here on the east coast. Nice collecting :)

What fun!
ReplyDeleteI think its great the you go beachcombing and by doing that you are keeping the beach litter free too. We are lucky enough to have the beach across the street from us. Unfortunately all I've found lately is little bags of dog poop that dog owners leave behind :( The local council is kind enough to provide bags to pick it up with and a refuse point, but some people throw it back into the ocean! Crazy!
ReplyDeleteI love going beach combing with my mom. It's so much fun and you can find some really cool stuff. I like to pick up cool rocks and shells too.
ReplyDeleteThat's an amazing collection for just 15 minutes. I love the colours! I'm going to have to keep my eyes open next time I'm at the beach.
ReplyDeleteVery cute! I want to go exploring someday soon so badly.
ReplyDeleteI love that you do this. It's not icky at all!
ReplyDeleteSuper amazing collections, and colourful too! One of my jobs has led me to the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, which is located in the perfect location that leads to a lot of the trash in the north Pacific gyre to the beaches of the islands. I've collected trash from all over Asia, Russia, North America and Hawaii on the beaches. My favourite finds have been plastic animals and glass fishing floats. Happy collecting!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE THIS!!! Don't be embarrassed! It's not much different than people who go treasure hunting with metal detectors and such!
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a little girl, I would spend hours digging up our back yard (much to my parents' joy, I am sure) with a little shovel to see if I could find some lost, hidden toy or something!!!
It's really funny, but you're having fun while cleaning the beach... Great idea ;)
ReplyDeleteBut do you keep all this "trash" after taking pics?
I love your blog, I'm always here reading, but it's the first time I post a comment (maybe because of my poor english =/ )
I don't think it's weird at all. It made a pretty photo, and cleaned up the beach. Plus you get an occasional pretty thing out of it.
ReplyDeleteIm from norway, and here Bø means boo(scary, like ghosts say;) or a towns name. I have no Idea what the sign is tho. Hope you find out;) It could be a door sign, or something like it, that is the only thing I could think about.
ReplyDeleteI love this post, you found some pretty cool items. Whenever I visit the beach again, I'm definitely going to beach comb! Thanks for the lovely idea Kaylah!!!
ReplyDeletexo -S
thanks for sharing! this is one of my favorite hobbies & im so happy to hear that someone else loves it too... & apparently a number of other readers as well =) my love & i are at the beach constantly collecting shells, rocks, glass, trash, sticks, seaweed... you know, the usual & we have a little running joke between us that we have to let the other know when they start to look like a hoarder.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it's that strange! You've found some incredibly interesting things there, and it's fun to think about their stories. Who left them on the beach? Why did they forget them? Why did they bring them to the beach in the first place?
ReplyDeleteWow, it looks like you found some incredible things :D
ReplyDeleteAnd you're doing some good by cleaning up the beach! Sadly, not many people want to do that.
x
I don't think that is strange at all! I have a glass container that I keep all my finds from the beach/walks in. One man's trash is anothers treasure, right? I always find broken plastic hair clips at the beach.
ReplyDeleteAli
Flotsam :)
ReplyDeletesomeone trash, somebody treasures, i love this :)
ReplyDeleteThere is soooo much litter on the beach! It is great that your little hobby makes a difference at your local beach! The photos are great! I have no idea what the bo is, but it looks like a funky scrabble letter! haha =)
ReplyDeleteThat's brilliant! I'm especially intrigued by the 'bø'! Could it be part of a word or is it all by itself? It means "boo" in Danish as well as Norwegian, like when you jump out to scare someone, haha (as some have mentioned above). Such a random thing to find on your beach! I love how neatly you've arranged your findings. I love to find things like that on the beach, although here people seem to mostly leave lighters and wrapping paper and other not nice things behind :/
ReplyDeleteI love photographing found objects! One of my professor did this project where she scanned found objects she gathered from her walks around Phoenix. It was these really huge 6' x 4' panels with a bunch of random objects...really beautiful and powerful! Here's the link to the project, in case you're interested (Julie Anand): http://asuartmuseum.asu.edu/exhibitions/viewevent.php?eid=104
