like collecting "treasures" on the beach.
These photos are from late fall, I forgot my digital camera that day and was forced to shoot only film (which I just got developed a few days ago).
Anytime time Kevin and I take a walk on the beach I randomly pick up things that catch my attention, which is probably more than you could imagine. On this instance I decided I wanted to pick up everything I found and neatly lay it all out to photograph when I was finished. This was only 15 minutes or so of collecting!!
There is always a ridiculous amount of litter on the beach. Perhaps I'm strange but picking these things up that people seem to have forgotten after a fun day of frolicking in the sun or that wash up on the beach from the lake is so interesting to me. Curlers? A glue bottle lid? The letter "P"? So weird.
On of my favorite finds from the day is that thing that has "BØ" on it. I'm not 100% sure what the heck it is but I liked it so much I brought it home (you can actually see it on my shelf in this post). Anyone know what it is or what it means?

ReplyDeleteBø is a town here in Norway (the letter 'ø' is used both in Norwegian and Danish), so maybe it has something to do with that? It does look like a sign of sorts...

wow, that's a lot to collect in 15 minutes! the letter P is kind of random? The thing with the holes kinda freaks me out :( I like the BO-thing though.
ReplyDeleteI kind of do that too, collect things on walks or at the beach; the usual, feathers, fun drift wood, shells/pebbles but also if I find really random things then yes I have a tendency to release my inner magpie!

ReplyDeleteI think it's amazing how this sort of things juste seem dirty in real life, but you have some magic in your hands and turn them poetic on your blog!
ReplyDeleteOn the one hand I could bet that if I went to the beach tomorrow I wouldn't find anything cute in the sand... but on the other hand I'm quite sure the beach would look different if I started looking for nice things! And who knows, I might be surprised to find things I didn't expected.
I don't know if my speach is clear but in a nutshell : thanks for encouraging us to look at the world around us with curious and optimistic view. It's inspiring, really :)

Haha it seems you are a 'strandjutter'. That's the Dutch term for someone who collects objects they find on the beach. On the Dutch isles there are a few juttermuseums, where strandjutters display their collection. I've been to one, and it was totally cool to see al those non-related items together! Really made me wonder what the story behind them was. So nothing to be embarassed about ;) And besides, your helping to keep the beaches clean, right? So kudos for you :)
ReplyDeleteI think it's fabulous that you pick up garbage! I always intend to do that whenever I go hiking. I hate seeing litter! I once found a pair of dentures at the beach (to which my dad's girlfriend chased my grandma around with). Good for you!
ReplyDeleteI don't think it's weird at all, but I am the type to pick up more "gross" trash, like cigarette butts and food wrappers, on hikes or in the park. I think a lot of people assume that "someone else" like a park ranger or otherwise is going to get it, but when it comes down to it, YOU are the one who is seeing the trash, so why don't YOU pick it up?

ReplyDeleteI think "BØ" might be danish.. The letter Ø is scandinavian. I'm from Denmark, but we don't have a word called "BØ".. It might be the tree beech - in Denmark we call it "bøg" :)

The Ø is a letter in the danish and norwegian alphabet. It does not have an equal in the english alphabet. Read more here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%98 I am swedish, that's how I know...
ReplyDeleteConsidering it's all just rubbish, it makes for a rather interesting collection of things. Me and my boyfriend are always getting funny looks for picking things up off the floor while we're out and about.
ReplyDeleteI do this too! Our parents would make it a game when we were children & we'd leave the beach each day of our vacation with far more trash to haul out than we hauled in. I still have a few finds lingering about, my favorite being a purple xylophone key with a monkey & the letter B on it. I have always kept it in my cars on the dash ... I cannot get rid of it, isn't it strange how objects find us & become a part of our lives.

Its not weird to me at all! I have done the same thing since I was a little girl! My husband and I do it now too! All the treasures are like little stories...its fun to imagine who left them and what they were doing! I love the way you arranged and photographed! I think I might have to do the same next time we are beaching!

Want to know a secret? Sometimes, I pick of interesting pieces of trash to use in art projects. I suppose that makes me a bit of a weirdee but quirky can be good, right?

ReplyDeleteMy favorite thing is a tiny piece of broken porcelain. I think it was part of a mug or something. The edges are not sharp anymore, really washed-out. It must have been in the water for a long time.
Another thing is a little rubberduck which is full of sand.
It always think those things come for far away and went through the whole ocean =)

I don't know what it is, but the word "bø" is the same as "boo", like when you scare people :-) In norwegian.

ReplyDeleteI think its great the you go beachcombing and by doing that you are keeping the beach litter free too. We are lucky enough to have the beach across the street from us. Unfortunately all I've found lately is little bags of dog poop that dog owners leave behind :( The local council is kind enough to provide bags to pick it up with and a refuse point, but some people throw it back into the ocean! Crazy!

One of my jobs has led me to the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, which is located in the perfect location that leads to a lot of the trash in the north Pacific gyre to the beaches of the islands. I've collected trash from all over Asia, Russia, North America and Hawaii on the beaches. My favourite finds have been plastic animals and glass fishing floats. Happy collecting!

I don't think it's weird at all. It made a pretty photo, and cleaned up the beach. Plus you get an occasional pretty thing out of it.
ReplyDeleteIm from norway, and here Bø means boo(scary, like ghosts say;) or a towns name. I have no Idea what the sign is tho. Hope you find out;) It could be a door sign, or something like it, that is the only thing I could think about.

thanks for sharing! this is one of my favorite hobbies & im so happy to hear that someone else loves it too... & apparently a number of other readers as well =) my love & i are at the beach constantly collecting shells, rocks, glass, trash, sticks, seaweed... you know, the usual & we have a little running joke between us that we have to let the other know when they start to look like a hoarder.

I don't think that is strange at all! I have a glass container that I keep all my finds from the beach/walks in. One man's trash is anothers treasure, right? I always find broken plastic hair clips at the beach.

I love to find things like that on the beach, although here people seem to mostly leave lighters and wrapping paper and other not nice things behind :/
