is definitely having the beach all to ourselves. I swear, it's the most under appreciated place anytime other than in the heat of summer. But, I'm not complaining - I love it!! The waves crashing up against the beach is such a calming sound. Each time we get there the sun is just about to set and it really just couldn't be any more beautiful.
Last time we were there (when these photos were taken) we found at least 25 dead monarch butterflies on the beach. In the fall they migrate south to Mexico, and I guess these guys just didn't make it. We found a few living ones, and even saved a few that were caught under drift wood. It was such an interesting experience. When I searched around online I found a few other people who happened upon the same thing on other beaches of the Great Lakes in previous year but said despite looking again each year they never happened upon the same thing again.

Aww that's sad about the butterflies. But I guess that's just nature. Weird that people didn't see it twice though...

ReplyDeleteI'm super sad about the dead butterflies. I know, I know, "they are just butterflies." But I'm the girl who has saved ants from drowning, watches my step so I don't land on a snail and generally respects all life. It's so sad they didn't make the journey!!! (Though the picture is hauntingly gorgeous.)
Your photos are so peaceful. I could just close my eyes and image I'm there.

Love the pictures! I Love the ocean and I can't understand why people only go there in the summertime. If I'd live near the ocean or even a lake, I'd probably be there every day/evening. Even if its cold. The sounds and air are all I need. I love sitting near the ocean and just listening. It's the most soothing thing in the world.

ReplyDeleteThose are wonderful photos. You make a brilliant point. We enjoy being outside this time of year, but I thought that beaches and such might even be blocked off. But you live in Ohio or somewhere around the Great Lakes, right? So they must not be closed. Hmmn, fun!
ReplyDeleteLauren, some beaches are blocked off at this time of the year. But there are a bunch around here that are open all year round!

Awww that is so sad about the butterflies, just part of nature I suppose but it is still sad to so many beautiful creatures dead. I'm glad you managed to rescue some. These photos are lovely, I love chasing birds too xo

ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, if you think the Monarch Migration is beautiful, you have to see pictures of my campus. They were there for an extended period of time because of the warmer weather, and they were literally everywhere- it was so beautiful.

ReplyDeleteAs for the butterfly migrating, the butterflies come to a beach here in California (Pismo Beach) each year. I've heard that there are several routes for butterflies to land during their journeys. The journey from north to south lasts several generations, and they sometimes skip locations. I do know that Pismo Beach is one of the few "permanent" locations they are found in the United States, and Mexico has a bunch of these locations. Maybe I'll post a few links to info sites later (:

ReplyDeletetobik, not all the monarch butterflies in the US migrate to California. Ones in the eastern part of the US go to Mexico.

ReplyDeleteSo gorgeous! We love going to the beach year round too, cold or not. I guess it's easier though here in SoCal where they never get snowed on! :) But I've never seen butterflies on the beach!

ReplyDeleteYes! Most of the butterflies fly to Mexico specifically Michuacan&Guerrero! I've gone to Mexico in the winter and its so beautiful to see all the butterflies <3
