The weather the last few days has been *perfect*! It's been cool enough to wear tights and sweaters, I'm loving it. Of course, I'm a little concerned that summer flew by so quickly but I really do love fall. I'm so excited to start decorating for Halloween (I swear to wait until at least mid September - no matter how hard that will be!), baking things with lots of pumpkin and cinnamon and visiting the corn maze again.
As well as wearing cozy clothes fall also means oodles of mushrooms! I am having so much fun picking, learning about and photographing them. We finally got a mushroom picking permit, so maybe just maybe the ranger will stop harassing us...? I can only hope so. I'm really excited to happily skip around on the trails gathering mushrooms in my basket and knowing I won't have to dump my basket before I leave. (I still can't believe he made me do that...)
All the mushrooms in the photos above (plus a few more!) were gathered in less than a half an hour time span and within an area around half the size of a football field. So exciting!
The woman in the park office said we were the only people to ever call there asking for a permit for personal use and collecting. She said everyone else calls for permits early in the year so they can pick and sell morels. I can't believe there are more folks in the area interested in identifying and collecting mushrooms.
xoxo

You're so lucky to have all these different kinds of mushrooms in your area. I think we just have like two kinds here. The top yellow one looks so cute
ReplyDeletewoah!
ReplyDeleteWow! They are beautiful! I saw a ton of mushrooms in my backyard and I immediately thought of you.
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome! My dad is interested in that too and asked me to pick him up a book on identifying edible ones-do you have any recommendations?
ReplyDeleteP.S. I'm so jealous it's cool enough there to start wearing tights! I live in Texas and we are having a terrible drought/heat wave....I can't remember the last time the high was under 102! At least a month now-eek!
This is such a fun collection. Happy fall! I too am excited for tights and cardigan weather.

Can't believe all the colours, amazing!
ReplyDeleteMindi, not really. I'm a huge fan of the iphone app "fungi" if he has an iphone. Other than that I normally use the internet to identify them.
ReplyDelete:)
Who knew you needed a mushroom picking permit?! Those are beautiful. I need to start doing this! I am always curious about the different types.
ReplyDeleteSo cute! I can't wait to see what you do with all of them. Those pictures are cute enough to be framed ..

ReplyDeleteMy Mr. has been reading books and taking photos of mushrooms for a couple of years now, but I'm too scared to let him eat them! I know it can be hard to properly identify sometimes, and I don't want him to get sick.
ReplyDeleteAny advice? Is my fear unfounded?
xx. Julia
Wow,this is quite a collection! :) I can't wait for fall either,so I can go outside without sweating like a pig! :P
ReplyDeleteso many mushrooms, Kaylah! it is indeed a jackpot! :)

OH MY GOD. I LOVE mushrooms. What a wonderful treasure!
ReplyDeleteYour pictures are delightful.
Mmm love morels! We used to pick them on my parent's property and eat them all up. They're such a cute little mushroom. We used to pick even the smallest ones because they do all their growing under ground and once they pop up they don't get any bigger.
ReplyDeleteDid you know that your body will only accept a certain amount of morels before it'll start rejecting them? Me and my two older sisters have all reached our limit, but they love them so much that they still fry them up and eat them even though they know they're going to throw them up later. It's only with morels though! I can still eat any other tasty mushroom just fine. Crazy, right? =]
Right up the road from us people pull over to collect mushrooms. It's quite a big deal around here. I don't know about getting permits tho. What was the rangers reasoning for making you dump them out?! What a big jerk, he needs a hobby STAT.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful mushrooms Kaylah! Wow! I wish i coud put on my favorite cardigan and go collecting with you! :)
ReplyDeleteHere in Virginia, we call morels "dry-land fish." They are so fun to hunt for in early Spring!
ReplyDeleteI took this last weekend & thought of you!

Hopefully the park ranger will leave you alone now! Have fun collecting!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait for fall either! some of my vegan friends are trying to come up with a vegan alternative to the pumpkin spice latte from starbucks. I love seeing all your picture posts (I organize everything too)
ReplyDeleteMushrooms are pure awesomeness :D
ReplyDeleteI never even knew you needed a mushroom permit, especially for something as harmless as collecting them! I'm glad you got it, though, and I hope the ranger leaves you be at last!
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping to see some recipes with pumpkin in them then!=p
ReplyDeletePumpkin as anything else that decoration is a rarity here in Norway, sadly=/
Wow I can't believe how many different kinds there are! xo
ReplyDeleteReally cool photos! I was just reading about mushroom scavenging in this months Bon Apetit!

ReplyDeleteI saw this and thought of you immediately. My sons preschool teacher had them out the other day collecting mushrooms. They collected 10 different kinds before even hitting the trail. I didn't realize we had so many up here.
I love your photos of mushroom gathering. All of those mushrooms look amazing, what is it that you do with them? Do you dry them or press them, or...what do people do with awesome looking mushrooms?
