Sally Hansen Nail Strips...

Since I initially posted my thoughts on the Sally Hansen Nail Strips I've bought more of them, tried another brand and learned a few things, so consider this a little update!
Sally Hansen Salon Effects - Cut it out. (Sorry, I couldn't find a link to this one, but you can find it on ebay)

I'm still head over heels in love, I love having super fancy nails and being able to do them myself (because I am not the kind of girl to get a manicure...) But I did realize that once you open the little container they're in (each box comes with two) that you have to use them. You can't cheat and save them for later. I tried to re-use some from the same little container as I used a week previous and they were hard. There was no possible way to apply them.  But as long as you don't have really long or really wide nails then you should still get two full applications from the box (if you do like I did and use the excess from one nail on another nail).

Over the last few weeks I've realized just how long these suckers can stay on too! The last photo above was taken after wearing the strips for 5 days! They still look pretty good if I do say so myself. It took 13 days before they started look bad enough that I wanted to change them. (That's gotta be a record for the longest I've ever not painted my nails!)

Despite my love for those, I'm still cheap so in the search for something more affordable I tried Broadway Nail's version. They were half the price and I could immediately tell why. I found them much harder to apply, and they almost immediately started showing signs of wear despite numerous top coats.
Other than the cheaper cost the only other good thing about these ones was that they don't come in an air tight container so you can use the one pack for as long as your heart desires if you're only putting them on a few fingernails like I do.

Another issue I found with the broadway nails ones were that when they began to wear they come off all in one piece. The Sally Hansen ones chip (not badly either, just a little bit at the tip after about a week) while these peeled off like a sticker. I guess the easy removal might come in handy if you change your nail color very often... But for me that was a huge turn-off.

So did anyone else try them? What did you think? I know Sephora has a brand too but they're mighty expensive, has anyone tried those ones?
xoxo!

  2. That seems really lane that they start getting bad once you open the packet. Fo you think they could just be put on some airtight container and they'd be fine?

  3. U U N A, I'm not sure! I'll try that next time! Good idea. :)

  4. Ooh cute! I have been wanting to try those out. The Sephora version ix really cool, but you're right, a bit expensive. I think I'll give the Salley Hansen strips a try. :-)

  8. I used the glitter Sally Hansen strips and I left them on for 3 weeks! They chipped very slightly but being chunky glitter it was really hard to tell!

  10. I tried the Sally Hansen ones last night. I really love them, but I found almost half of them weren't sticky when I took the backs off. I had opened one of the little packages earlier, but not used them. Do you think that's why they weren't sticky?

  11. I tried them about ten days ago and it still looks like I just put them on! Sad to hear about the airtight deal...hmm...I bet half of mine are hard as rocks now. =( I'm gifting some to my teenage niece for her birthday this weekend.

  12. How hard are you on your nail polish? Because 5 days would beat any record I've ever set for myself! Haha

  13. I've been wanting to try those so badly, but I can't get myself to pay ten dollars for one coat of nail polish (basically.) Rats!

  14. I spent weeks looking for the Laced Up print, it was hard to find. At first I wondered who would pay so much money for a solid color, but having seen how long they last I want to try those too!

  15. I tried some at Sally's ART CLUB GLAM but not Sally Hansen brand and I could not get them to stick and they would rip apart when I tried removing them to apply. I will give SH a shot next time but they tend to sell out fast. Thanks for the post and all the good info!

  16. Have you ever looked at konad plates? they use nail polish and an etched metal plate with a rubber transfer thing to give you the same effect basically. And they can be reused a million times so they're way more economical

you can look up youtube tutorials on them to see exactly how they're used.

  17. I actually really liked the nail dress ones, but I agree with you in that the application was kinda tricky. I always use a basecoat with them aswell, and I found them to wear really well. I use the ORLY rubber bonder one. Try using a hardcore topcoat like seche vite maybe for less tip wear.

  20. I tried them in Frockstar and in the Laced-Up. Loved them both, but I did find that with the Frockstar I had to literally scrape it off of my nails so I could redo them. Yikes! The Laced-Up came off just fine, but I'm avoiding the pink glitter one that I have because I know how much of a pain they are to take off. =(

But I got tons of compliments on my nails, I loved them. I think Frockstar is my favourite.

  21. I love the sally hanson hounds tooth ones and got tons of compliments, I did find them really hard to get off though.

  22. i've used the sally hansen ones and i LOVE them! they lasted for two weeks on my nails and the only reason i had to take them off was because my nails grew and there was a gap at the bottom. otherwise i would have kept those babies on longer. i actually used them with the claires mood polish that you've posted about. let me tell you, those were some fun nails :)

  23. Try these ones http://shop.incoco.com/index.php/ I did the french manicure and they stayed on and looked great for 2 weeks. They are actually starting to run kiosks in malls with these and showing people how to do them, but charging WAY too much for them when you can just buy online, or ebay.

I have 2 packs of the sally hansen at home and plan to try them out tonight or this weekend, I love how you paint some and have some patterns. :)

They say if you want to reuse or save them, put them into a ziplock so they don't dry out.

  24. By the way I am sooooo glad I can read the comments on your blog now, nice update!

  25. I have been doing reviews of these on my blog as well! I agree with you about the broadway brand, they are cheaper for a reason. But I did discover that they work great for toes! http://missmerryweatherscreations.blogspot.com/2011/03/tippie-toes.html

I also get the problem with a gap at the bottom of my nails as they grew out, otherwise they would last longer. But the Sally Hanson ones are still my favorite. I didn't know that about not being able to save them for later, good to know!

  27. I REALLY wanted to try those and now that you've posted about them a couple of times I think I will. Definitely let us know if the air tight container works, that's what I was going to try.

  28. I used to super gold glittery Sally Hansen ones for St. Patty's day. I absolutely loved them and I got so many compliments on my nails! I wish they weren't ten dollars a pack, but I guess that's less money than going to a salon! I'm not a manicure type girl either.

    ReplyDelete
  29. So glad you posted this. I was literally about to get some cheap-o's from Sally Beauty. I'll stick with Sally Hansen. Thanks!

  30. Wow! These are so so cool. How do you apply them? Like are they in the shapes of nails or do you cut them yourself?

You are so stylish from head to toe to fingernails!! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  31. Hahaha. I blogged about these today Too!! Weird. I got the leopard print ones and they are great! I havent had chipping or anything!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Thanks to you, I tried these out and LOVED them! Do you think possibly if right when you opened the package you cut put them into something different to keep them "fresh", I noticed that they also sort of dried out and were impossible to re-use.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I Love the SH ones. They last forever, but they are also a little bit too expensive. I Can't wait to try the other brands! Thanks for the tips!

  34. i saw these on your blog when you first wrote about them and have been dying to try them ever since. my local walmart finally had a set in i wanted (theyve been sold out for ages of all the best ones)

i got the houndstooth and after some confusion regarding how exactly they work (i thought they were stick and peel, but sticking them on and filing the excess away is so much better!)
anyway, it took me an hour to do (3x longer than i usually spend carefully doing my nails) and i looooooove how they came out. LOVE. tysm for writing about them <3 (for for the babbling message haha)

  35. Hi. I have been using the SH nail strips also. Like you, I found out the leftovers were unusable. On the second packet I taped up around the edges of where I opened them so no air could get in and was able to use those leftovers when I redid my nails.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I'm in love with them, too! I also found out (the hard way, by wasting 2 different boxes!) that they dry out after you open the packet. I want to try sealing them in an air tight container to see if I can re-use them, because sometimes I just like putting them on one or two nails instead of every nail. Regardless, they're great quality and pretty inexpensive! I've been finding lots of $1 off coupons for them in the newspaper and at the drug stores as well.

  37. I've tried the Houndstooth ones and LOVE them! I've also bought their Teal ones but wasn't impressed ... they didn't go on well!

Have you noticed that your nails are stripped a layer or two once you remove the strips??

    ReplyDelete
  38. I love these!
And what is the light-pool-green color that you used with the Cut it out nail strips? That's my favorite color! I've never even seen it in nail polish :o (Not that I really looked though, haha)

  39. dangit, I didn't realize the entire box had to be used at once! oh well. I personally really like them. have you ever tried konad nail stamping? I think it's more cost effective in the long haul for designs like hounds tooth but obviously the multi color prints by sally are unbeatable

    ReplyDelete
  40. I tried the butterfly ones and I loved them. I only did one finger on each hand with the strips and painted the rest of my nails with nail polish. The nail polish started to chip the next day while the Sally Hansen strips didn't start to chip until a week later.
I didn't realize that they could get hard, I'll have to check on my extras. I hope that some day that they come down in price because they are awesome.

  41. i got some houndstooth ones but i'm letting my nails get a smidge longer before i try them. i'm getting really impatient to test them out though! hurry up and grow nails!

    ReplyDelete
  42. I've been really wanted to get some nail strips. I haven't considered what brand to go for yet though.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I actually don't like konad nail stamping. I bought some a while back and had the worst time with it. I think it's way too much of a hassle.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Oh goodness. I love love love the Sally Hansen Nail Strips. I'm always in a rush, but I need my nails to look clean and polished for a long time- the Sally Hansen ones always last me forever (With the Rimmel top coat, which is heaven!). I love them and recommend them to anyone who loves having cute nails. :D

    ReplyDelete
  45. These things are awesome, but I like to think of them as the cheapest manicure I've gotten. Drawback is that they don't come with a pair of hands to massage your hand and clean up your cuticles =)

    ReplyDelete
  46. My friend got me the Sephora ones as a present, they can be reused a bunch (I had no idea the Sally's couldn't) and stayed on a while, 5 days before I got bored and removed them. They peel off like stickers, which I like, I think they're a good buy!

    ReplyDelete
  47. brigitte, they can be reused? hmmm....now that's kind of interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  48. i bought some of the sally hanson ones, i had the same problem as someone else, they didn't seem very sticky. and I don't know if it's just me, but I had a hell of a time getting them on!! I had planned to do every finger but it was so hard, I just did two on each hand!

    ReplyDelete
  49. I also tried to use the leftovers only to find out they didn't work. I tried to blowdry them to maybe get them soft again, but that didnt' work. I love the Sally Hansen strips though. I had a super hard time taking them off though. Was it easy for you? I still keep buying them, but I want to figure out a way to use the left overs. There has to be some way.
p.s. love your rainbow nails in the new post.

  50. I love the Sally Hansen strips, never thought to use the excess! That's a pretty good idea, i think I'll be able to shell off another ten for them now that I know that (:

  51. the sephora ones are not worth it... hard to apply, expensive and come off after 2 days!!!!! stick with sally hansen those ones are my favorites and like you I have tried the off broadway to compare...
