Google is your best friend! This is how we plan our weekend thrifting extravaganzas. Google "thrift stores near ....", "antique mall near ....", etc. (obviously "...." is where you type where you live) Then map out a route in google maps. I do this in two tabs, one to find the places, the other to map.
Don't judge a book by it's cover. So you've googled a new thrift shop, driven there and boy oh boy does it look gross. The outside is kind of sketchy looking and you're thinking about driving away...DON'T! Some of my favorite stores didn't look so hot on the outside (or inside for that matter.) Obviously you don't want to risk your safety, we've accidentally stumbled upon some not so nice places in the city and promptly left!

Keep a list of stores you like and don't like. Jot down why or why you liked the store. This is something I regret not doing, I think about starting one all the time though. We've been to so many thrift stores all over Ohio and when revisiting an area I never can remember if we've been to a certain store and if I liked it or not.

Remember, you CAN wash it! Some of my favorite thrift scores were nasty. I mean the kind of thing that you put your sleeve over your hand to carry it to the cash register. Case in point- Once I got an old frying pan with mushrooms on it, when I found it was almost all black with grime. But after washing it off at home with bar keepers friend it looked brand new. No lie! Don't overlook something just because it's dirty.
my wonderful collection of colorful thrifted shoes!

Go during off hours! The hardest time to shop is when there are tons of people there (for me at least). I get distracted and rush.

Ask your local stores about sales. Most Salvation Armys are 50% off on Wednesday. Unique Thrift Store is 50% off on Mondays. Sometimes Goodwill has sales where housewares are 4 for 99 cents! Find out what sales the stores near you have and get there early. There is nothing better than finding something cheap on sale!
Happy Hunting!

my wonderful collection of colorful thrifted shoes!Take your time! Slow down. You're bound to miss things if you're rushing. Don't just skim over the store either...

Look behind things! Some seasoned thrifters (myself included) hide things they want to buy but aren't a 100% sure on yet while they shop, or even to come back for on another day! You never know when that precious thing you've been hunting for is a lot closer than imagined.
I found that in a pile of clothes!
I found that in a pile of clothes!Take a (very patient) friend! I can't count the number of times Kevin has shouted "Kaylah, seriously!?" in a thrift store. This means I've missed something I would go nuts over. It's so weird, I can usually spot a deer, owl or mushroom from a mile away but sometimes I just don't see them! Don't take someone who will rush you, or whine a lot though. (like my dad! haha!).

Possibly most important- go regularly! You can't just go once, find nothing and then call it quits forever. There are some weekends where we don't find a single thing. Other weekends we find a carload full of goodies!

I'm Kaylah. thrifting queen.

Thanks! Actually just seeing your earlier thrifting posts (and posts from other bloggers) inspired me to google stores in my area. I found quite a few which I didn't know existed, but when me and my boyfriend went to look for them, the first two on our list weren't there! Probably old listings.
ReplyDeleteWe did end up find the Salvation Army thrift store and spent a while there. I bought pretty keds for $2.99 CDN! I'll probably blog about them soon.
Although I didn't google antique stores. Thanks for this!
Dori :)

OMG, I had no idea you had a blogger blog...I've been following you on Tumblr for a while and adore your style but to find your blog? I'm in heaven!!!
ReplyDeleteAs for thrifting, I am such a thrift-whore. I have a favorite shop that looks so nasty (inside and out) that I have found the most awesome goodies at regularly! Just this week found two gorgeous vintage flat sheets in perfect condition (once they were washed), 8 or 10 great picture frames to use in my art, an almost new pair of Yellow Box suede clogs ($75 shoes for $.50! Woot!!), a yard of burlap, and 3 new candle sticks...for a whopping $4.75 total. YAY! Go me! LOL
Lovin' your blog so expect to see me around here very regularly!
Peace & Love,
~Barb~

Great post girly!!! I love thrifting when there are NO people...it's so hard for me with my schedule but I totally agree about that rushed feeling you get when there are tons of people...not fun! I hope I find some goodies this weekend! I'll be looking for miss-matched white dishes to paint (solid brights) & fire for my own custom AWESOME dish set! Haha! Happy thrifting!

ReplyDeleteGreat tips! Houston has a street downtown that is lined with thrift and resale shops! Once I move home (in about 5 days!!) I'm so heading down there!
ReplyDeleteThank you! Thank you! Thank you! :o)
ReplyDeleteThanks for your thrifting tips! You are so right when you say take your time and sometimes you just don't see the thing you should see if you are in a hurry! This afternoon I went thrifting in a new village only 15 minutes away from my place, but what a super thrift store, in the future I will be there every week! :)
ReplyDeleteYour thrift findings look very nice!

ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this with us Kaylah! If I'm honest I haven't been thrifting for a very long time, I sorta gave up because 'I never find anything' but now I feel freshly inspired again! My favorite thrift partner in crime is my mom, so I think I'm gonna give her a call ;)!
ReplyDeleteThanks!

thrift stores are amazing! my friends always think it's so gross, but older knick-knacks and stuff always look to me like they have a story to tell :}}
ReplyDeleteI wish we had more good thrift stores around here, most of the things in my house are from thrifting adventures. And yes, things can be cleaned and sterilized of cooties! I've even gotten some great shoes from a Goodwill once, they looked brand new. I love all the pictures in this post.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tips.
ReplyDeleteI totally want to try thrifting after seeing all the cute things you've picked up. c:

Saw an owl ornament yesterday at Value Village, it was of two owls on a tree branch, and one hanging upside down...with the saying "Nobody's perfect"...total cheese but made me think of your blog. I thought about sending it to you, then thought how creepy that was, haha.
ReplyDeleteLove it! The Owls (are they salt and papper shakers?), the sewing machine picture frame, and the lady teacup set are my faves. I can't wait to get back to the states so I can thrift regularly again!
ReplyDeleteGreat tips!
ReplyDeleteI wanted you to know that I've passed on the Beautiful Blogger Award to you :) http://ajthepurple.blogspot.com/2010/03/beautiful-bloggers.html
Thanks for being a beautiful blogger!
You got it all right! I've been thrifting for years! And this is how you do it. But I have to add more to your post...
ReplyDeleteCheck www.yelp.com for thrift stores. I've found great places there!
Go to craigslist.com and pennysaver for estate sales and yard sales. I love thrift stores but sometimes it's good to get to the source first which is the estate sales and yard sales. It's often way cheaper and more exciting to dig in to the nooks and crannies of old homes and you'll always find little treasures. Like these things that I found http://chickything.blogspot.com/2010/03/vintage-finds.html
Make sure you get there really early because there would be long lines.
Our Salvation Army here in L.A. also has a separate antique store which has more amazing stuff! Most of the time, it's located in a different location so make sure you ask. Maybe your SA has this too. I've found so many awesome things there.
One more thing, go to thrift stores in upper class neighborhoods. You will find more vintage furniture there that are not too worn out and really beautiful and you will find more vintage clothing too!
Good Luck! And happy thrifting!
My husband is good for wandering through one thrift store, more than that, or combined with a trip to the market, and he becomes all sullen and complain-y. ^_^ I love those owl salt and pepper shakers. I've been looking for cool shakers for a while now and not seen any that catch my fancy.
ReplyDeleteGreat tips! And oh my gosh, these pictures are VERY inspiring!
ReplyDeleteomg i love all those shoes!!!!!!! and that sewing machine frame! thanks for the tips :)
ReplyDeleteoh, my gosh...did you get the owl mirror, that is awesome!!!
ReplyDeleteOh, awesome! I'm in love with your finds. :) thanks for the tips!!
ReplyDeleteI like the tips alot, thanks!
ReplyDeleteantoher good tip: Fix it!
I bought a bag that was destroyed by it's previous owner.
it was real leather and was 2,50 euro.
I got it fixed for 5 euros.
so there you have a leather bag that looks new for only 7,50 euros
i love thrifting. some of my friends are totally grossed out by used clothes but...doesn't bother me at all. I have a washing machine and it works fabulously. So...whatever. Plus once I wear something new once it is used anyways...
ReplyDeleteThrifting is so much fun and you get to be unique! I love it. Thanks for sharing your tips. I am happy someone (someones!) else thinks like me!
Hi this is a really great post I am a reguler thrifter myself but in the UK. Our shops are alot smaller and I live in Nottingham City Centre so they tend to price things a little higher here but there is one charity shop which is always amazing. I managed to get a teal velvet skirt for 0.99p ($0.75) today.
ReplyDeletex
you're amazing.
ReplyDeleteOmigosh, I just found your wonderful blog via ♥elycia, and I just had to tell you I had that girl plate, mug, bowl ensemble as a kid!!!! I just got so excited when I saw it! tee hee! Happy hunting!
